Who are we....

PlaceMakers is the trading name of Fletcher Distribution Limited, the retail trading arm of Fletcher Building Limited in New Zealand.
PlaceMakers is New Zealand's leading and largest supplier of building materials and hardware. We're 100% committed to our customers.
We employ over 2,500 people and assist over 300,000 customers.
We have more than 62 stores, from Kaitaia to Invercargill.
We sell over 74,000 product lines from concrete to paint and plasterboard.
We manufacture frames and trusses from 20 manufacturing plants nationwide.

Partnership is a major theme in our business. Each PlaceMakers store is a joint venture between a local business partner (Joint Venture Partner) and Fletcher Distribution Limited. This means:
The Joint Venture (JV) Partners run their own business with backup from a major player in the building industry.
Customers get the personal attention from a local business - with the cost savings, product range and service that's only possible from a national operation.
PlaceMakers people get to work as part of a dynamic team supported by a high level of product knowledge and skills development provided by New Zealand's leading building industry supplier, Fletcher Building Limited.

The current PlaceMakers operating structure developed following the 1988 merger between Fletcher Merchants and Winstone Trading Limited (that included Odlins and Zip Trading).

Fletcher Merchants Limited

In 1910 James Fletcher established a joinery factory and began Fletchers long association with the timber industry. Over 70 years, Fletchers became one of the largest timber merchants. In 1958, Fletchers expanded into building materials merchandising by purchasing a number of companies including McCallum and Co Limited, HC Kitchen Limited, Felvins Limited, Ellis and Burnand Limited and several branches of John Burns Limited.

Fletcher Merchants, as it became, introduced the hardware supermarket / one stop shop concept into building materials merchandising in New Zealand and 1981 they adopted a new trading brand - PlaceMakers.

The Winstone Group

The Winstone name goes back as far as 1864 and over time grew a reputation supplying an extensive range of materials to the building and construction markets. Winstone Trading Limited was formed in 1984 and over five years grew to provide national coverage by purchasing a number of smaller businesses including Odlins and Dudding Brothers.

The merger of Fletcher Merchants Limited and Winstone Trading Limited in 1988 produced the largest and only nationwide building materials chain in New Zealand.
